Zip Drive - Definition

A Zip Drive is a small, portable drive used for backing up and retrieving data from disks. The “Zip” is actually trademarked, developed, and sold by Iomega Corporation. Zip drives are available in two different sizes – the 100 megabyte, which is capable of holding 100,431,872 bytes of data, or the 250-megabyte. This drive is attached to the computer via an IDE port. Additionally, the zip drive is capable of storing far more information than a standard floppy disk. This technology was short-lived with the advent of CD-Rom burner drives, which itself was more or less replaced by the DVD burner drive.
