Virtual - Definition

The term Virtual refers to a device or facility that does not physically exist, yet behaves as if it does. For example, virtual memory refers to an imaginary set of locations, or addresses, where data can be stored. It is imaginary because that memory area is not the same as having real physical memory. For example, a system with 4MB of virtual memory may have only 1MB of physical memory plus cheaper and slower auxiliary memory. Yet programs written as if 4MB of physical memory were available will run correctly.
