Router - Definition
A Router is a device designed to act much like a bridge between one or more computer networks, but provide additional functionality, such as the ability to filter messages and forward them to different places based on various criteria. With the use of a router, data packets can be sent to the next network point. Tables of data is created or maintained by the router, which then uses it when determining the best route. The Internet uses routers extensively to forward packets from one host to another.
