Layer - Definition
A Layer, in data communications, is a grouping of related tasks involving the transfer of information. It is also a level of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model used for networking computers. Control is passed from one layer to the next, starting at the application layer in one station, proceeding to the bottom layer, over the channel to the next station and back up the hierarchy. In graphics, images can be created in layers, which can then be manipulated separately and then flattened into a single image.
