Latency - Definition
Latency can be considered the time needed for an electronic message to travel across a communications system and for the remote system to respond. Latency is inherent in all computer systems because nothing happens instantly, but usually things happen so quickly that the delay does not matter. For instance, Memory latency is the amount of time a computer needs to wait to get data from RAM. Communication latency is the time taken for a packet of data to be sent by an application, travel and be received by another application. On an input device, such as a joystick controller, the latency would be between using an input device and the result being displayed.
