Hertz - Definition

Hertz (symbol: Hz) is a unit of frequency used to describe the rate of change in state or cycle in a sound wave, alternating current, or other cyclical waveform of one cycle per second. It replaces the earlier term of cycle per second (cps). Hertz is commonly used to measure a computer monitor’s refresh rate and also a computer processor’s speed. The CPUs in Personal Computers just passed from commonly being measured in MHz to being measured in GHz. Monitor refresh rates are most frequently measured in KHz. The Hertz is named after Heinrich Rudolph Hertz who first detected electromagnetic waves in 1883.
