GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) - Definition
GIF is an abbreviation for Graphics Interchange Format, which is a method of describing a monochromatic or color image as a coded series of bits. Interestingly, while most users pronounce the acronym with a hard G (as in “goat”), its developers pronounced it with a soft G (as in “gift”). In a reference to the Jif Peanut Butter slogan, they even claimed “choosy developers choose GIF.” GIF, BMP, JPEG, TIFF and PNG are now the most commonly used image file formats.
