Most programs will run properly on Windows XP. Some exceptions are older games and programs that were written specifically for Windows 95, Windows 98 and/or Windows Millennium. Therefore, this technical brief will show you how to set the Compatibility Mode to help you run older computer programs on Windows XP.
Getting Older Programs To Run On Windows XP
- Locate the program icon or its shortcut for the program you want to run.
- This can be an icon on your Desktop or its shortcut contained in the Start menu.
- Once located, Right click on the program icon or shortcut.
- This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Properties.
- Now click on Compatibility Tab located at the top of the screen.
- Then place a check mark next to Run this program in compatibility mode:
- Then click on the menu arrow to choose a former Windows Operating System.
- Try selecting the Windows 98/Windows Me option first to see if this works.
- Then you can go back and select the Windows 95 option if necessary.
- Then click on the OK button to close the Shortcut Properties Window.
- Now try launching your program to see if it runs properly on Windows XP.
- If it still doesn’t run properly, try adjusting some of the display setting.
- For instance, try selecting the program to run in only 256 colors etc.
