Filename - Definition

A Filename is a name assigned to a file when the file is first written on a disk. Every file on a disk within the same folder must have a unique name. Depending on the operating system, such a name may also identify a directory. Since Windows 95, you may use up to 32 characters for filenames, and filenames can contain any character or symbol (including spaces), except for the following: \ / : * ? “ < > |.
