The term Codec comes from Coder/Decoder and can be considered any hardware or software designed to modify the data in a transmission. Codec programs are often used to unite separate audio and video streams for videoconferencing and other streaming media applications. Some popular and commonly used codecs for computer video include ASF, Ogg, MPEG, QuickTime, RealMedia, Indeo and Cinepak.
